Ayse Rana Özsan, student geschiedenis
History has always interested me as a subject because so much of the world around us can only be fully understood by examining what has lead up to the present moment.
Hi! My name is Ayşe Rana Özsan, I'm 22 years old and I have just begun my third year of the History programme here at the University of Groningen. I came here all the way from Canada and, predictably, I'm in the international track of this programme. I'm an active member of our study association Ubbo Emmius and participate in several committees within the university.
Besides my involvement in the university itself, I enjoy spending time with my friends, learning languages, and travelling as much as I possibly can. That, and befriending the many stray cats wandering about Groningen.
Why History?
History has always interested me as a subject, because so much of the world around us can only be fully understood when examining the past. I had many other interests before starting university and, in fact, majored in business in 2018. However, when I realized my favourite courses were two electives in History, I knew that changing my programme was the right choice for me.
Why Groningen?
Coming from Toronto, at first I wondered whether Groningen might be small or uneventful in comparison. During my first visit to the city, I realized immediately that I had no reason to be concerned about this. Student life here is incredibly active and vibrant, with no shortage of things to do or people to meet. Even after having spent two years here, there’s no sign of boredom yet and I’m looking forward to another great year in the city!
Future
I don’t think I can answer this question with any more certainty than the average bachelor’s student, but my current hope is to continue to pursue history and embark on many research projects. I’m still narrowing down my interests and determining which era, region and field of history I want to specialize in, but I have high hopes that the remainder of my bachelor’s degree will lead me in the right direction.
Golden Tip
The best advice I can give, is that you should follow what interests you and not worry too much if the future still seems unclear. You never know whether the next seminar will finally reveal what you want to pursue. Also, remember to stop and take a breath sometimes! Keeping up with your courses is amazing, but be careful of burning yourself out.
